Gum Springs former player elected to Fairfax County School Board

by Martha Coleman posted 02/11/2011

Eugene Coleman, III, a junior at Mount Vernon High School, has been elected by the countywide Student Advisory Council (SAC) to serve a one-year term as student representative to the Fairfax County School Board, beginning July 1.  He will be the 41st student representative to the School Board.

Eugene is enrolled in the full IB program at Mount Vernon with a grade point average of 3.9. He is junior class president and is serving in his third year of Marine Corps JROTC where he was promoted to captain. He is a member of the school’s MVP (Men of Vision and Purpose) program, formed to create and encourage male leaders, help close the achievement gap, and dispel the stereotype of young African American males. He is a member of the Debate Team and founder of the school’s glee club, Major Movement, as well as a member of the National Honor Society and Black Student Achievement Council.

Eugene also volunteers in the community with the Gum Springs Youth Athletic Association. He played football under this club where he received Player of the Year at the Fairfax County Football Hall of Fame in 2008.   In addition, he is a member of Together We’re the Answer, a community collaborative that builds on the strengths of African American families.

In his spare time, Eugene flies private planes.  He is a licensed pilot for Gliders and is currently working on obtaining his private pilot’s license for engine planes.

Eugene is heavily involved in school, volunteering, and keeps himself quite busy.  He has received many awards and accolades for being an honor student, leader, and a role model.  Because of this, he was selected for “Spotlight on a Student” for Fairfax County, VA and was featured on Red Apple Channel 21 in November 2010.

Eugene plans to attend college after high school, with West Point and Harvard being his two top choices. He plans to study pre-law and major in political science.  Look for more great things to come.
